Celebrating the 20th Anniversary edition of The Sexual Politics of Meat: A Feminist-Vegetarian Critical Theory Tue 10/19/2010 8:00 ~ 9:00 PM Building 260, Room 113 Stanford, CA On the evening of October 19, Carol J. Adams will be giving a slideshow lecture on the relationship between patriarchal values and meat-eating. This slideshow is based on the content of her book The Sexual Politics of Meat: A Feminist-Vegetarian Critical Theory, which was just recently released in the 20th anniversary edition. In addition to authoring The Sexual Politics of Meat, which has been translated into several languages, including German, Japanese, Chinese, and Korean, Carol J. Adams is also the author of many other books, including The Pornography of Meat, Living Among Meat Eaters, and Neither Man nor Beast. With Josephine Donovan, she has edited three collections on feminism and animals: Animals and Women: Feminist Theoretical Explorations, Beyond Animal Rights, and most recently, The Feminist Care Tradition in Animal Ethics: A Reader. Her interest is in analyzing and challenging interconnected oppressions, and in creating progressive theory that de-centers the human. Her Sexual Politics of Meat Slide Show has been shown on more than 100 college and university campuses and in several countries. On October 20, there will be a follow-up symposium entitled "Can Literature Help Real Animals." In the symposium, Ursula K. Heise will draw from her forthcoming book How Extinction Means and Shelley Fisher Fishkin will draw from her book Mark Twain's Book of Animals in dialogue with Carol J. Adams for an engaging round table discussion at the intersections of literary studies, critical animal studies, environmental studies, and feminist studies.
