Climate Change, Health and Ethics

6/5/2008

In 2007, I attended the UCLA Evolution in Human Altered Environments and AAAS Conferences, (See Video) and the scientists explicitly stated with supporting data that humans are negatively impacting our environment so significantly that we need to act now.  We've heard this in the news, but I wanted to see the scientists present this, and I wanted to have some conversations with them which I did.  Alaskan residents (who were sitting as AAAS conference guests in the row right in front of me) stated that global warming has changed their lives forever (see video). There is another important fact I wanted to share with you that has not been advocated in the mainstream media; it is this UN Climate Change Report point stating that Animal Agriculture causes more greenhouse gases than transportation. http://www.fao.org/newsroom/en/news/2006/1000448/index.html
In addition, from a health perspective, Dr. T. Colin Campbell, one of the world's foremost epidemiological scientists and the director of what The New York Times called "the most comprehensive large study ever undertaken of the relationship between diet and the risk of developing disease" wrote a best-selling book called The China Study which states, "No chemical carcinogen is nearly so important in causing human cancer as animal protein."
We can all reduce carbon emissions and animal suffering and improve our health by transitioning to a vegetarian lifestyle.
