Video: Helene and Spencer Marshall - California Beekeepers Fell in Love With Bees and Eachother04/06/2012  Spencer & Helene Marshall w Mary During the April 5, 2012 Honey Saison Beer Launch at The Fairmont San Francisco, Spencer and Helene Marshall, Owners of Marshall's Farm Natural Honey in American Canyon, California, discuss their Love for Bees and Eachother. They describe that 40 years ago it was easier to raise bees and 2 percent of the bees died every year. Now he says they're lucky if only 50% die... "it's the pathogens". They say that many people have left Beekeeping because it's too hard now, but Spencer says he fell in love with the Bees and Helene and that's why they keep on with the business. Spencer says: "The message they get from the bees is that we're not doing it right." The video cuts off at the end but Spencer says "we need to get our Business and Political Leaders to work towards protecting the Bees"...that means that all of us need to put pressure on our legislators to work towards their protection. I've also included a video of the Fairmont San Francisco Bee installation below where you'll see Spencer Marshall and Fairmont San Francisco Executive Chef J.W. Foster carry the bees onto the Fairmont Roof next to the vegetable garden. In June 2010, The Fairmont San Francisco’s Executive Chef JW Foster, in partnership with Marshall’s Farm, installed honey beehives in the hotel’s culinary garden in order to help support the bee population, which has decreased in number by 90 percent since the 1980s. They started with 100,000 bees and now they have 200,000. Fresh honey is used at afternoon tea, in cocktails, entrees and desserts and now in the new Honey Saison Beer, which is offered on draft in Laurel Court Restaurant & Bar. I've also included pictures below from the recent Zinfandel 2012 Festival (ZAP) where Chef JW Foster originally told me about the Fairmont Bees and how they're now traveling to Golden Gate Park's Eucalyptus Trees. He also shared his House Honey Roasted Winter Squash Brushetta with Fennel during the ZAP event. We have power as individuals in our homes, yards, and communities.
